In April 2021 the eight existing councils in Northamptonshire were abolished and replaced by the two new councils of North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire. This means that Planning in Northamptonshire is now handled by the two new unitary authorities:
West Northamptonshire serves the areas of Daventry District, Northampton and South Northants, and;
North Northamptonshire serves Wellingborough, Kettering, Corby and East Northants.

North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy
The North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy was adopted on the 14th July 2016. This is a Part 1 Local Plan for Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Wellingborough. For more information click here.
The Council are reviewing their strategic planning policies through the North Northamptonshire Local Plan to take into account changes since 2016, and extend the plan period to 2041. The Plan will also cover some non-strategic matters that are set out in the Part 2 Local Plans. The next Draft Plan Consultation is due in June 2024. Visit the Councils webpage for more information.
The Part 2 Local Plan for Corby was formally adopted in September 2021. The Plan and supporting documents are available here.
The East Northamptonshire Local Plan Part 2 was adopted on 7 December 2023.
The Kettering Site Specific Part 2 Local Plan was formally adopted in December 2021. The plan and supporting documents are available here.
The Plan for the Borough of Wellingborough was adopted in February 2019.
West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy
The West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy Local Plan (Part 1) was adopted on 15 December 2014. The adopted Joint Core Strategy covers the administrative areas of Daventry District, Northampton Borough and South Northamptonshire District.
West Northamptonshire Council are preparing a new local plan for the area to guide development in the period up to 2041. The West Northamptonshire Local Plan will replace the West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy Local Plan (Part 1) and the Part 2 Local Plans which were adopted for the former Daventry, Northampton and South Northamptonshire areas. The Council consulted on the Spatial Options Consultation document from October to December 2021. Further updates can be viewed here.
In February 2020 Daventry District Council adopted the Settlements and Countryside (Part 2) Local Plan 2011-2029. The Part 2 Local Plan replaces all of the remaining saved policies of the 1997 Daventry District Local Plan and supersedes policy H6 of the WNJCS.
