On the 1st April 2021 the eight existing councils in Northamptonshire were abolished and replaced by the two new councils of North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire. This means that Planning in Northamptonshire is now handled by the two new unitary authorities:
West Northamptonshire serves the areas of Daventry District, Northampton and South Northants, and;
North Northamptonshire serves Wellingborough, Kettering, Corby and East Northants.

North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy
The North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy was adopted on the 14th July 2016. This is a Part 1 Local Plan for Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Wellingborough. For more information click here.
The Part 2 Local Plan for Corby was formally adopted in September 2021. The Plan and supporting documents are available here.
The East Northamptonshire Local Plan Part 2 was submitted to the Secretary of State in March 2021. The Secretary of State has appointed Planning Inspector Elaine Worthington MTP MUED MRTPI to undertake an independent Examination. Hearing Sessions concluded on 5th May 2022. During the hearings a number of Action Points were discussed. The Council are now supplying the Inspector with the work requested. This will then be considered byt the Inspector before deciding on the next steps for the Examination process.
The Kettering Site Specific Part 2 Local Plan was formally adopted at North Northamptonshire’s Full Council meeting on 1 December 2021. The plan and supporting documents are available here.
The Plan for the Borough of Wellingborough was adopted in February 2019.
West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy
The West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy Local Plan (Part 1) was adopted on 15 December 2014. The adopted Joint Core Strategy covers the administrative areas of Daventry District, Northampton Borough and South Northamptonshire District.
West Northamptonshire Council is now preparing a new Strategic Plan for the area. This will replace the West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy and will cover the period up to 2050. The Council consulted on the Spatial Options Consultation document from October to December 2021. The Draft Plan Consultation (Regulation 18) is expected later this year. In February 2020 Daventry District Council adopted the Settlements and Countryside (Part 2) Local Plan 2011-2029. The Part 2 Local Plan replaces all of the remaining saved policies of the 1997 Daventry District Local Plan and supersedes policy H6 of the WNJCS. The Northampton Local Plan Part 2 and its accompanying documents were submitted to the Government for independent examination by a Planning Inspector on 4 February. Two Inspectors have been appointed and Hearing Sessions took place in November 2021. The Inspectors have submitted a Post Hearing Note to the Council. The Council will continue to progress outstanding work and begin to draft a schedule of main modifications to the Plan which will be consulted upon in due course. Further details can be found here.
